The Universal Language of the Dorm Room Door

The door to your dorm room is the gatekeeper to your privacy. Privacy is a precious commodity in a community space such as a residence hall but something as simple as your door can speak volumes. Let’s break down door etiquettes in dorm rooms.

Door fully closed: If you know someone is inside, a door fully closed means not available or needs privacy.

Halfway closed or cracked: Available but please announce your presence or knock first.

Open all the way: Free to come in without knocking or announcing your presence.

If anything is unclear, always get clarification from that person. Respecting people’s privacy, especially in a small space like a residence hall comes a long way. Have a great and safe semester!
