Should I Get The Flu Shot?

Getting the flu shot each year can come as second nature to some people and it can be a strange far away thought for others. If you don’t really know much about the flu shot but you are considering whether or not you want to take it this flu season, check out some of the pros and cons before making your final decision.

  • Can prevent the flu- There is a huge chance that the flu may work for you and keep you going on with your everyday routine each day. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that the vaccination had a 71 percent reduction in flu-related hospitalizations for adults of all ages.
  • Can’t give you the flu- Experts say that the shot is safe and is made from either no flu vaccine viruses or not infectious viruses that cannot possibly give you the flu.
  • Always Improving– The vaccine improves each year, getting more effective and user friendly. Although there is now 2 shots you would need to take to prevent the flu, there is also an alternative method of a nose spray that will have the same outcomes.

  • May not be safe– The flu shot contains mercury, which many people find to be a huge turn off to some people as too much mercury can harm you. Also, if you are extremely allergic to eggs, taking the shot may not be the best decision as the viruses used in most vaccines are grown in eggs and can cause an allergic reaction.
  • Not Guaranteed- Although the flu shot is known to be very effective, it’s not a guarantee that you won’t come down with the flu. While for some this is a chance they are willing to take, others that hate getting shots or have a fear of needles don’t think it’s worth it. Also, keep in mind that the shot will take about 2 weeks to kick in so you won’t be covered for those weeks.
  • Side Effects- While most side effects are not severe like sore and red arm, fever and aches, there can be more serious long term effects that cause things like Guillain-Barré syndrome.

Whatever side you choose to take, just make sure you are comfortable with your decision and do what you feel is right for you.
