If you’re in college, chances are one of your New Year’s resolutions is to be more focused. Most likely you’re juggling 4+ classes in addition to any social clubs you may be involved in and perhaps even a part time job to help make ends meet. Which means you’re quite the busy bee…
Based on those factors, maintaining your focus is a worth while goal to aim for. Easier said than done no doubt.
Below are five helpful tips to solidify any resolutions you may have about maintaining your focus for the New Year. Hopefully they’ll teach you to take the bull by the horns and learn how to create better focusing habits for the year ahead of you.
# 1: Eliminate Your Distractions.
As cool as it is to check into Facebook or Twitter every couple of hours about what you’re doing or where you’re planning on going to, there comes a point when you have to stop. Unplugging yourself from the online world for a few hours a day is the first step to managing your focus. If you can’t unplug completely, try limiting your texts or social news scrolling to twice a week versus every day. You may not be in the loop on every single thing your friends have been up to back home, but you’ll find you’re not so easily distracted.
# 2: Manage Your Time.
Habits are necessary. Sometimes they can be bad and sometimes they’re good – it’s all about reshaping the current ones you have. Block out chunks of time in your day to focus on your school work, laundry, working out or simply vegging out with your buddies. Creating a schedule for yourself is a great way to break your old habits and build new ones.
# 3: Reach Out To Your Professors.
Focus is key here. Your professors and student counselors are good sounding boards to help keep you on track, motivated and held accountable for your work. Make a point to reach out to them and/or make friends with your professors so you have a strong relationship to rely on when you have difficulty with an assignment or class.
# 4: Exercise & Sleep.
The old time classic of exercising regularly and sleeping at least six hours per night truly is a direct link to preserving focus. Even if exercise isn’t your thing, walking around your campus a couple of times a day will get your adrenaline going. That adrenaline produces endorphin’s, which help keep you motivated and happy!
# 5: Food For Happy Thoughts.
Another all time favorite, ‘you are what you eat,‘ is a big influence to your overall health. Meaning, what’s good for your body is good for your brain. Eat foods that work for your body instead of against it. So, cut out the greasy foods and replace them with foods like fruit, nuts, eggs, avocados, beets and fish. The amino acids, vitamins and antibodies will keep your body properly balanced.
