On Campus Housing – getting acclimated to living in a dorm

Living in a dorm for your first year is an important   rite of passage to becoming a college student, and you should be all sorts of excited! Here are a few things to take note of / tips to help you prep so that you do not become overwhelmed about what you need to do next.

  • DO NOT bring everything from your room into your dorm room. Bring only the essentials such as your computer, toiletries, bedding, and clothes. Pack light, as you can always bring more with you later on.  Move in day is hectic, and the goal is to make your move highly efficient / as easy as possible. Remember, you do not need to unpack everything on move in day. There will be plenty of time to decorate your room the way you want to.
  • Some campuses will assign you a specific move in date and time  to arrive  and check into your dorm. Please do follow those instructions.
  • Pack what you’re bringing into a box or crate. This seems pretty obvious, but we have seen students roll up to campus in  their vehicles with their backseat bursting with their stuff.
  • At some point, you will be notified about your roommate situation by Residence Life.  We  highly encourage you to reach out to your roommate to build a rapport with them.

It’ll be a new experience and may feel overwhelming at times, but as long as you follow the steps that Residence Life provides  you with,  you will be just fine.
