Top 5 Milestones of College

Society has a flare for capturing the pivotal moments in ones life. From your birth to your first few steps, every accomplishment has either been documented, celebrated and/or gossiped about. Thanks to your parents, you’ve had your own personal cheering squad salute you throughout these moments. But, like most upsides – there comes a time when you no longer have the ‘drive‘ to celebrate each and every instance.

Sadly, it’s called growing up…

Celebrating still happens, but generally, it revolves around getting through your exam week, passing the class you hated or winning a round of beer pong you were sure you were going to lose…  And when you celebrate these new ‘super important moments,‘ you celebrate it over a beer – not a pep rally screaming your name.

The reality of it all doesn’t really hit you until about your second or third semester into college. Once you realize you’ve been scammed and understand that you’re truly on your own, you can then allow yourself to focus on what accomplishments you want to set for yourself.

Top 5 ‘Milestones’ In College

#1 Declaring Your Major
No longer a victim of the horrid core classes, you’ve decided on what YOU ‘want to be’. You actually have a title. You’re no longer a lost seal pup swimming in the ocean all by your lonesome. Congrats to you! This definitely deserves a few rounds of beer and perhaps the following day off to recuperate. It’s OK to skip a day of classes, right? Shhhh, don’t tell anyone I said so.

Declaring your major is HUGE. Don’t let stereotypes fool you.  You’re set in a concrete direction of what type of work you want to do for the rest of your life. As in FOREVER…. Haha j/k. You can still work and do ‘other things.‘ After all, you don’t want to eat the same cereal everyday. Seriously, who wants to do that? Variety and options are nice. It’s also one of the unique advantages we have available to us here in the good ole U.S.A. So, take advantage of your opportunities and have fun celebrating!

#2 Becoming an Intern
You’ve come so far only to once again begin at the bottom of the food chain. Or in this specific case, work chain.

Yes, internships are without a doubt the ‘hazing‘ period of the workforce (at least that’s how I’ve always viewed them). From the crazy amounts of paper work you have to delve through, copy and/or file away, to the endless rounds of coffee runs you’re required to go on. In some odd or perverse way, you know someone’s hosting a ‘ha ha party‘ behind closed doors when they send you out to do an errand for them.  Sure, it’s work experience, but if I wanted to get hazed I would have joined a sorority dang it!  The truth is, YOU need the experience to pass college and get a real job.  Which means, you gotta do what you gotta do.  Though you might not feel like you’re ‘achieving‘ much during your internship program, at the end of it all, it’s without a doubt an accomplishment.  So, suck it up, be friendly, file the files, and go get the coffee.  Do this, because ultimately – the people you work with are the people who will refer you to the dream job you’re hoping to land.  Eventually…

#3 First Apartment
By now, you’re probably on your way to moving out of the dorms and heading to your first house or apartment. Hopefully, it’s with one or more people you know that can afford to pay a portion of the rent and bills each month.

This celebration usually involves a house warming party. So, cover any of your nice threads, because surely by now you’re aware of how crazy college parties can get.  If you haven’t experienced one yet, you’ve been forewarned.  Don’t forget to put away every nice piece of furniture or anything that is breakable.  You want to celebrate this accomplishment, not worry about what’s happening on your bed or how you’ll explain to your mom that granny’s vase is irreparable the next day.

#4 Shedding Your Insecurities
Yes, it may sound like your mommy is preaching to you, but the truth of the matter is – you’ve had enough ups and downs by now to be comfortable in your own skin.  Going through a few rounds in the ring will do that to a person.  You now know that there are good days and bad days – or you’re more aware of them at least.  This means that instead of throwing your pillows and clothes all over the room like a 3 year old having a temper tantrum, you can now separate those ‘crappy moments‘ from your main focus and grunt through it confidentially.  Maybe now you can approach the person you’ve been crushing on and ask for his or her number without thinking about the consequences.  Or better yet, you can walk up to the class podium and give a speech without sweating bullets because ‘god forbid everyone will be looking and listening to you.‘  Either way, you’ve got this! So, give yourself a big pat on the back; this moment wasn’t an easy hill to climb.

#5 Hello Real Life Romance
Say goodbye to high school firsts and hello to college romance.  After the first few semesters of college, you’ve most likely gotten the hang of what college ‘dating‘ is really like.  The only accurate depiction that comes to mind for the college dating scene is going through a drive through at McDonald’s (or some other crappy fast food joint). Generally, the fries are OK, but every once in a while you get a bad batch and you decide to put off eating there for a while.  College dating is similar.  Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose, but when you win – (i.e. you find yourself doing mundane things together just for the heck of it), you know you’ve reached another milestone. Sometimes it’s those little moments that build into something that you least expected. Enjoy each and every one of them.

As a Dorm Room Movers author, feel free to add any additional milestones you feel relate to college experiences that I may not have mentioned.
