Move in day is almost here.
After weeks of shopping, packing, and crossing items off your college checklist, you’re about to begin one of the most exciting chapters of your life. Whether you’re moving into a residence hall for the first time or returning for another year, the first few days on campus are full of new experiences.
If Dorm Room Movers helped store your belongings over the summer or shipped your items to campus, we’re glad we could make one part of the journey a little easier.
As you get ready to unpack and settle in, here are five tips to help you start the semester on the right foot.
1. Take advantage of move in week
The first week on campus is unlike any other.
Residence halls are filled with welcome events, floor meetings, game nights, and activities designed to help students meet one another. It might feel a little outside your comfort zone, but attending a few of these events is one of the easiest ways to make new friends.
Remember, everyone is starting fresh. Chances are the person standing next to you is hoping someone says hello first.
2. Make your dorm feel like home
Your dorm room may not be huge, but it will become your home for the next several months.
Take a little time to personalize the space. Photos, blankets, posters, plants, or a few decorations can make the room feel much more comfortable and familiar.
A space that feels like your own can make a big difference once classes begin and your schedule starts getting busy.
3. Learn your campus before classes begin
Before your first day of class, spend some time exploring campus.
Find your classrooms, locate the library, student center, dining hall, recreation center, and any other places you’ll visit regularly. Knowing your way around ahead of time can make the first week of classes feel much less stressful.
It is also a great excuse to get outside and start feeling at home on campus.
4. Be open to new experiences
College is filled with opportunities you may never have again.
Join a club that catches your interest. Attend campus events. Introduce yourself to classmates. Try something outside your comfort zone.
Some of the best friendships, memories, and opportunities begin with a simple decision to show up.
5. Give yourself time to adjust
Moving away from home is a big transition, even if you’ve been looking forward to it for months.
You might feel excited one moment and overwhelmed the next. You might miss home while also loving your independence. Those emotions can exist at the same time, and they’re completely normal.
Give yourself time to settle in. Every student adjusts at a different pace, and before long, campus will begin to feel like home.
Here’s to a great semester
Move in day is more than unpacking boxes. It’s the beginning of new friendships, new experiences, and countless opportunities to grow.
Enjoy the excitement, embrace the unknown, and remember that every student around you is starting a new chapter too.
