Now that you’ve settled into your dorm, it is the perfect time to branch out and meet students outside of your immediate hall. College is more than just classes and homework. It is also about building connections that can shape your experience for years to come. Here are a few reasons why it is worth putting yourself out there:
1. Making friends (the obvious one).
Whether you end up as best friends or casual acquaintances, connecting with more people is always a good thing. You never know when you will discover a classmate in the same lecture, someone who shares your hobbies, or an invitation to an event you might not have heard about otherwise. Friendships and connections often pop up in unexpected ways.
2. Becoming part of a bigger community.
Think of your dorm as more than just a place to sleep. It can be a built-in support system and a source of fun. When students work together, they can create experiences that go far beyond movie nights in the lounge. My dorm once organized a trip to Disneyland simply because enough of us came together to make it happen. When you are part of a larger group, the possibilities multiply.
3. Creating a dorm culture people want to be part of.
A dorm can become its own little community with a personality and energy that people take pride in. When residents pitch in to make the space lively, supportive, and fun, it becomes a place everyone wants to be, even those who do not live there.
Looking back, some of my favorite college memories came from time spent in the residence halls. You do not have to be best friends with everyone, but being open and friendly goes a long way. Future you will be glad you made the effort.
