Move-In Tip: Connect With Your RA Early

One of the first people you’ll likely meet on move-in day is your Resident Assistant, often referred to as an RA. Whether you’re living in a traditional dorm, suite-style housing, or campus apartments, your RA is a key part of your residential experience.

So, who are RAs, and what do they actually do?

Resident Assistants are trained student leaders hired to support and guide students throughout the school year. Their role is a blend of mentor, community builder, event planner, and policy enforcer. From hosting floor meetings and organizing welcome events to answering questions about campus life and addressing concerns, RAs are there to help you settle in and thrive.

What makes RAs unique is that they’re also students, just like you. They’ve been through the first-year experience and understand what it’s like to feel a little overwhelmed, excited, or unsure during those early days. Many RAs take the job because of how much their own RA helped them when they were new. In fact, one of our former student contributors said:

“I became an RA because mine took the time to help me feel seen during my first week. That made all the difference.”

So if you’re unsure where to go for something, curious about getting involved, or just need someone to talk to, don’t hesitate to reach out to your RA. They’re not just there to enforce rules – they’re a resource, a guide, and often the first friendly face you’ll get to know on campus.

As you start your college journey this fall, keep an open mind and say hello when your RA stops by. You might be surprised how much of a difference that connection can make.
