Staying on Campus for Thanksgiving Weekend? Here’s How to Make the Most of It

If you’re spending Thanksgiving weekend on campus this year, you’re not alone. Maybe you’re a Resident Assistant staying to keep the residence halls running, an international student, or simply someone with circumstances that make travel tough this year. Whatever the reason, you can still make this Thanksgiving a memorable one. Here are some ways to make the most of your long weekend on campus:

1. Catch Up or Get Ahead on Assignments

Thanksgiving break gives you a great chance to knock out some assignments. With fewer people around, it can be easier to find a quiet study spot. You might even get a jump on upcoming projects, which will definitely lighten the load in those busy end-of-semester weeks.

2. Do Some Light Studying

If you’re not in the mood for an intense study session, keep it light. Re-reading class notes or reviewing flashcards can help you stay on top of things without diving into full study mode. Plus, it’ll make getting back into the swing of things post-break that much easier.

3. Plan a Friendsgiving

One of the best parts of Thanksgiving is the food and company—so why not bring that spirit to campus? Connect with other students who are staying, and put together a casual Friendsgiving meal. Each person can pitch in with a snack, dessert, or even a favorite family recipe to share.

4. Discover a New Show or Movie

With a bit more downtime, you can finally start that series or movie you’ve been wanting to watch. Explore new genres or check out something your friends have been raving about—it’s a fun, relaxing way to unwind. Just remember, maybe switch it up from your go-to comfort show to keep things fresh!

5. Explore Campus

With so many students away, campus will likely be much quieter than usual, making it a great time to explore. Check out any campus trails, or just take a walk to parts of campus you rarely visit. Sometimes seeing familiar spots without the usual crowds offers a whole new perspective.

6. Chat with Your Resident Assistant

If you’re close with your RA, see what they’re up to over the break. They may know of any small gatherings, events, or activities happening on campus. And hey, they’re staying for the holiday too, so they might appreciate the company!

7. Start Packing or Prepping for Winter Break

If you want to be ahead of the game, use this weekend to start organizing or packing up some non-essentials for winter break. Doing a little now will make your departure easier when the semester ends. (And when you’re ready to move, Dorm Room Movers can help with storage, hint hint!)

8. Give Back Through Volunteering

Thanksgiving is all about giving back and reflecting on what we’re grateful for. Check for any local food drives, or see if there are volunteer opportunities close to campus. Helping others in need is a rewarding way to spend your time and can make the holiday more meaningful.

While being on campus for Thanksgiving may not be the traditional holiday experience, it can still be a time for rest, reflection, and connection. Whatever you decide to do, take a moment to appreciate how far you’ve come this semester. Thanksgiving is all about gratitude, so remember to give yourself credit for making it through another chapter of college.
