Let’s Talk About Spring Break 2021

Yes, yes, we do understand that the semester just started, but we also know that you probably already have spring break on your mind. If you take a quick glance at your school’s academic calendar, you’ll notice that spring break is either omitted, revised, or has a massive asterisk next to it. Whatever your campus is planning for spring break, there’s no denying that this year’s spring break will look vastly different than the vacations from years prior.

While it may seem like a distant memory by now, perhaps you recall that  during Spring Semester 2020, many colleges were already on spring break when the pandemic struck. Therefore, any students that were already away from school at the time were encouraged to either stay off campus or place themselves in quarantine / self-isolation before they could come back.

Instead of repeating last year’s past mistakes, this year, universities are offering 1 of the 3 options we’ve seen thus far. The three possible options are as follows:

  1. Canceling spring break altogether. We haven’t seen if these vacation days will be replaced by something else entirely, but we can safely say that in this scenario, spring break is gone for sure.
  2. Splitting up spring break and scattering those off days – sprinkling them throughout the calendar year.
  3. Repurposing  spring break and renaming it “reading days” while also reducing it to just 2-3 days long instead of a week.

Right now, until this vaccine is made available to the public, we’re all in some sort of holding pattern, waiting for release with bated breath. . Until then, we urge you to continue to practice good health and safety measures such as social distancing, washing your hands regularly, and most definitely wearing a mask.
