Earning money while in college

In college, I heavily contemplated getting a part-time job but was unsure if I would be able to balance my course load and work hours. For those who can and are currently doing this, major props to you – it is not an easy feat! These days, there are some pretty lucrative opportunities to make extra cash while in college. Here are a few ways to put dollars into your wallet.

TASKRABBIT

Taskrabbit is an online and mobile marketplace that matches freelance labor with local demand, allowing consumers to find immediate help with everyday tasks such as cleaning, moving, delivery, and handyman work.

If you have a set of skills other people could find valuable, try offering up your services on Taskrabbit. You have flexible hours and can set your own rates.

UBER/LYFT

The well-known and relatively easy way to earn money on the side is to become an Uber/Lyft driver. You will have immensely flexible hours with this option, but the real money pours in during events and weekends.

APPLE

While they are still relatively unknown and not extremely marketed, Apple boasts robust work opportunities for college students such as working at the Apple Store, helping customers at Apple Support, or becoming an Apple Campus Rep. These positions are part-time and provide great resume building experience.

WORK STUDY

This one is a bit different. Work study programs offer part-time jobs for undergraduate and graduate students that allow them to earn money to help pay for education expenses. Work study encourages community service work and work related to your major. Check with the financial aid office or your advisor if your college participates in work study.

Overall, it’s good to learn to understand and control your financial health. Having this knowledge will put you in greater control of your future. Honestly, I wish I had the knowledge I have now when I was a college student so that  I wouldn’t be swimming in such large student loan debt now. I don’t have regrets, because I found my education to be extremely valuable. However, I certainly would have made better chess moves had I been armed with the information I now know. As they say, experience is the best teacher!
