Note taking in the digital age

App.

So you got a fancy new tablet for Christmas?! Congratulations! Besides watching Netflix and playing games, this gift could be a great companion for school if you use it wisely. From taking notes, to using applications for school use, in this piece, we will discuss 3 great note taking apps you can download.

Apple Notes (iOS)

Apple Notes is Apple’s default notes app that comes with iOS, so you will have instant access to it without requiring a tier payment system to use its features.

If you have multiple Apple devices such as MacBook Pro, iPad, or iPhone, notes will be automatically synced up across all devices, so it’s extremely helpful to view your notes without having to copy and paste or rewrite them.

The beauty of Apple Notes is that you are able to “drag and drop” pictures, movies, links, and other files into our virtual notepad.

In addition, if a friend needs to borrow your notes or you are working in a group project setting, there’s a collaboration feature where you and your friends can view and make real-time edits the notes.

There are a ton of great features inside Apple Notes, so if you have an Apple device and are looking to begin using a notes app, Apple Notes is a great place to start. Here is a useful video guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EDInyPSQTc

Google Docs (iOS, Android)

The beauty behind Google Docs is that it’s a browser-based word processor, which means that you can create, edit, and share documents online and access them from any computer or mobile device with an internet connection.

Another plus is that Google made it incredibly easy to share documents across platforms and work on them together in real time. Your collaborators don’t even need a Google account to view or share documents.

The best part about Google docs is that it’s free! Here is a useful video guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAkGUaMNpSI

Ulysses (MacOS, iOS)

Ulysses is a minimalist’s dream with a gorgeous and sleek design that includes several themes, expansive keyboard, and nifty features such as word count goals. The two downsides; expensive subscription model and it’s only on iOS and MacOS.

What we love about this particular note app is its word count goal. How many time must we have to highlight the selected text and squint to find the word count on the lower left hand corner or press a button in the menu settings? With Ulysses, the word count goal is absolutely perfect for writing those term papers with strict word count.

Out of the three listed, Ulysses has a subscription model: $4.99 monthly or $39.99 a year, but there is a special discount for students!

Pro-tip: If you don’t plan on writing often, this would not be the app to use, considering there are other wonderful FREE notes app, such as the ones mentioned above, that offer similar functions and features. However, if you’re a novelist or in a field where you are required to write often, then this app is highly recommended and may just be the one for you!
