how to deal with getting a lower grade than you expected

#1 Don’t punish yourself- Don’t deprive yourself of social time just because you didn’t do as well as you thought on an exam, paper or assignment. If you studied hard and did the best you could do, you should even reward yourself for staying focused and trying your best.

#2 Figure out what you did wrong- Did you answer some multiple choice questions wrong or not fully understand the scope of the assignment? Decipher what exaclty you did wrong, even if that means going to office hours and discussing it with your professor. Don’t leave yourself in the dark if you don’t have to be.

#3 Learn from your mistakes- So, now that you know what you did wrong, you can learn from it for your next exam. Did you not trust your gut and second guess your answers? Maybe you studied the wrong chapters or used the wrong study method. The good thing is it’s still the beginning of the year so you have tons of time to figure out what methods work best for you.

#4 Remember, it’s not the end of the world- This is not your first exam, paper or assignment, and it will likely not be your last. Pick yourself up and try to keep in mind that this doesn’t mean you failed at life or even at that class. There is time to make up for this bad grade and to do better next time.
