How to plan an epic new year’s party for you and your friends

New Year’s 2015 is just around the corner and that means it’s time to start planning your party! If your goal is to have a nice quiet get together with a few friends and watch a couple of your favorite movies from the 90’s, you may as well stop reading right now.

But for those looking to do something big, something exciting, something epic that everyone on campus will be talking about for the whole week after New Year’s, then check out some of the ideas we’ve put together here.

  1.  Theme

Don’t be overwhelmed or intimidated by choosing a theme. You don’t have to go over the top with something super expensive or extraordinary. You just need to choose something, even if it’s just deciding the mood or vibe you want.

  1.  Music

The right choice of music can definitely make or break the party. It’s all about timing and choosing the right mix for the vibe you’re going for. You might start out with something a little more chill at first and then build up as the night progresses. After midnight, pretty much anything goes!

  1. Lights

Lighting can change the feel of your party more than you may know. You might try using colored light bulbs at strategic places around the house, or try dimming the lights and using candles. It’s all about atmosphere.

  1. Food

Sometimes it’s not even about what kind of food you’re serving, but if there’s enough to go around. It’s smart to go with bite size portions or finger foods. Consider that most people will have probably eaten dinner before arriving for the party. They aren’t looking for a heavy meal, just stuff that’s easy to snack on. It’s a good idea to try and get a head count ahead of time so you can plan for enough food.

  1. Clean

No one wants to show up to a messy, filthy house to party. Plan ahead and leave yourself some time to clean your place up before the guests arrive. Yes, this means the bathroom too. You may even decide to do a quick rearranging of the furniture for more open space.

  1. Goodies

We’re not talking about more food here, but about the cheesy traditional New Year’s stuff that everyone seems to enjoy. Noisemakers, hats and horns just never seem to get old for some reason. Have some on stock and ready to go as midnight approaches.

  1. Relax

The truth is, it’s tough for your guests to enjoy themselves and let loose if they sense that you’re up tight. This can be tough when you’re hosting because you’ll be running around making sure everyone else is doing good, but try to have some fun yourself.

When it comes to an epic party, it’s really all about the people. When you have the basics taken care of, your guests will take care of the rest.
