8 Things To Do Over Summer Break

With summer around the corner, you’re bound to have a few goals of your own that you want to accomplish during your much needed time off. Other than the few ideas you have bouncing around in your head, try out some of the ones that are listed below. I’m sure one or two of them will tickle your fancy…

#1: Go camping with a group of friends… Camping with your folks or with a group of friends is one of America’s favorite pastimes during summer break. The weather’s warm, so you’re not going to turn into an ice cube over night. Plus, star gazing around the campfire while roasting marshmallows is a great way to connect with the people you’re with. It’s time to turn off the gadgets and get back to where the wild things grow for a day or two.

#2: Take an online class… Depending on how long your break is, you may be able to jump ahead of your mapped out curriculum for the fall semester by adding a class or two to your schedule over the summer. The great thing about summer classes is that they’re short, sweet and to the point. It’s like taking a 1500 page book and compressing it into a 500 word essay. You get through it more quickly and still get the credit of reading it – or in this case; taking it.

#3: Read the top 5 current best sellers… Hop onto Amazon and check out the best sellers of 2014. If you’re a tad behind, you might as well peruse the 2013 list as well. There were quite a few books that were listed as “must read” and if you’re any thing like me and enjoy to read other peoples thoughts or stories (you are or you wouldn’t be here), then do yourself a favor and see what you’ve missed out on. If books aren’t your thing, check into the best movies or TV series you may have missed out on this past semester.

#4: Take a train, tram or bus ride somewhere… If you’re still in penny-pinching mode from the Spring semester, try playing tourist for the day and take a tour of your home town. You can visit all of the local hot spots that interest you. Maybe it’s the art museum you’ve always wanted to walk through or simply settling down in a park for the day. Regardless, if you live in a city or small town, it’s bound to have a local transportation system of some kind. So, hop on and get going to wherever you’ve been meaning to go.

#5: Take your mom out and pamper her for a change… Mom’s are wonderful. They take care of you without ever expecting anything in return. It’s an unconditional love and support system you don’t often reflect on, but should. This summer break, make some time to treat your mom to a lunch date or a reflexology appointment. Spending a little quality time doing something she’ll like is a great way to express your appreciation for all of the things she does for you.

#6: Surprise your dad with a fishing trip… Just like mom, quality time with your dad is essential as well. If you’re lucky, you can spend it outside together. Does he have a local fishing spot or hiking spot nearby that he tends to go off to on the weekends? Go there and hang out with him for the day. Maybe he’ll even throw in a few brewskis to share with you!

#7: Join a local community sports team… For a majority of students, exercise gets placed on the back burner. Which means, those all nighters you pulled for exam week or any other college related function that may have TAKEN precedence have now officially caught up with you. Time to put those muscles into use and get them sculpted back in shape. Even if you’ve never really done the whole exercise thing, getting into a regimen or finding a local sports team within your community will do wonders for your self-esteem and energy levels. If you have no idea where to start, simply google search your local community sports options. There are usually teams based on age, gender and/or co-ed options. It’s a great way to meet new people or connect with old friends.

#8: Get a part time job or check into your college’s internship options! If money is tight and mom or dad give you the stink eye every time you ask for a hand out, then it may be a good idea to check into getting a part time job at one of your local community offices. You can check local listings the old fashioned way – in the newspaper or simply hop online and check into part time work through an indeed search. Many businesses are in need of a part time employee to help out with odd jobs around their office. Though it’s not a dream job, it’s great way to earn some cash and learn your way around an office setting if that’s in your future plans. If not, you can always check into any internships online or through your campus career center. If you’re lucky, you may be able to land one that you can use academically
