Turn That Frown Upside Down – Getting Over The College Blues

Between moving away from friends and family and having to work out the kinks in your demanding class and study schedule, the pressures of college can add up.   Learning how to cope and maneuver around the chaos is helpful. Below are a few tips on how to do just that:

# 1: Get The Right Beats!
There’s a reason why the cliched quote ‘music makes the world go around‘ has meaning. Music truly helps connect you to others, alleviates stress, enhances your creativity and can be a great mood leveler. Invest in Pandora or iTunes – a great playlist will come in handy for any of those rainy days ahead of you.

# 2: Sweat It Out…
At minimum, exercise at least 3 times a week. Studies show that if you exercise, your body produces serotonin also known as “happy endorphin’s” which are known to help reduce feelings of irritability and anxiety. Check out your campus gym and turn your alarm clock on a couple of hours earlier than your first class. Starting your day off by jogging, lifting weights or simply some yoga stretches will keep your head on the sunny side of the clouds!

# 3: Eat Right!
Just because there is an all you can eat buffet at the campus cafeteria does not mean you should try every item on the menu. Moderation is key here; eat when you’re hungry, but do it healthily. If you want to keep your figure lean or get into shape fast, try having 1-2 glasses of water prior to every meal. More often than not, dehydration signs are misinterpreted for being hungry. Also, having fruit and granola bars readily available will help curb cravings. The old saying ‘you are what you eat‘ actually comes in to play here folks. Selecting the more healthy choice will help keep your body balanced – and a balanced diet does a body good!

# 4: Sharing Is Caring…
If you get into a funk, spend time with friends. Having people around you is a great way to lift your spirits. Better yet, communicating with a buddy of yours about where your head’s at may prove to be useful. In most cases, if they’re a good friend and mean well they’ll be able to give you a few pointers on how to work through your problems.

# 5: Skype Anyone?
If you’re still homesick after trying out a few of the above, hop on Skype. This application is available to download for most phones and any type of computer. The best part is it’s FREE! Since it’s free, it won’t eat up any of your minutes or someone else’s. Staying connected with friends and family back home will alleviate any insecurities about missing out on stuff. You’re going to college for a reason, remember?  Don’t let your homesick episodes stop you from furthering your education. Unless you plan on owning your own business, there’s a good chance you’ll need that degree at some point.

# 6: Positive Affirmations…
It might sound (or read) cheesy, but they do help! Take a look at positive quotes on any of your social media channels. Instagram and Pinterest have great ones if you’re looking for strictly visuals.
